Zine Paper Options

While most zines contain both images and text, the trend in contemporary design is toward more photography and less text. In most cases, you'll need to pick paper that gives sharp photo reproduction and clear text. We recommend gloss or matte text paper for vibrant, faithful color, perfect contrast, and fine detail. If you want your zine to reflect eco-friendliness and a natural aesthetic, you can opt for uncoated paper.

Paperback Cover Paper

Interior Paper

To make things easier, you can download a zine cover template to check the spine thickness according to different paper types and page amounts here.

Zine Bindings

While you can cut costs by choosing a “self-cover” approach, the binding often depends on genre, page count, and readership preferences—not just your budget. The most popular options for zines are saddle stitching and perfect binding. Recently, single sewn binding has also gained popularity for its traditional appeal.

This means that we compile your zine from folded sheets stacked inside each other, often with a cover sheet of glossy art paper, and then stapled down the curved edge. Saddle stitch is only possible with a page count divisible by four, up to a maximum of 64 pages. But to make sure the zine is neat and lies flat, we recommend a limit of 48 pages or fewer for this style of binding.

This is the binding we use for paperback books, too. We collate the interior pages into a block, glue them together and then glue the lot into a wrap-around cover made of heavier art paper or lightweight card stock. This is definitely the best option for binding zines which have 48 pages or more or have art and photography on every page.

Singer sewn binding is very similar to saddle-stitch binding, but it uses threads instead of staples. The page count must still be divisible by four, and the maximum recommended page count for singer sewn binding is 80 pages.

FAQs

What are the common zine sizes?

5.5" × 8.5" and 8.5" × 11" are the most common zine sizes—both of which are cost-effective. If you need a different size, we can also print your zine in any custom dimensions.

How should I send my artwork?

Feel free to share your artwork with us through email, Sprend, or WeTransfer to [email protected]. Or send us a share link via Dropbox or Google Drive.

Can I download images directly from the website for printing the zine?

No. Website images are generally low resolution. For high-quality booklet printing, images or photos should be at least 300 dpi to ensure clear, crisp results.

Which file types can I send?

For printing purposes, we require artwork in high-resolution PDF format, which includes 0.125 inches / 3 mm bleed.

What color mode is used for printing?

Offset printing uses the CMYK color space.

Can I order sample book?

You can get acquainted with our quality, products, and paper stocks by ordering a sample pack from here.

Hardcover Board Book Bnding

This binding method adds a hardcover to a standard board book for extra durability and a premium feel. Like traditional board books, the pages are glued together rather than bound, with a printed sheet wrapped over the first and last boards and across the spine. The difference is that a hardcover is then applied, enhancing protection and making it a popular choice for high-quality board books.

The interior pages will have rounded outer corners. The corners of the cover are not normally rounded. If you need round corners for your cover, please contact us.

Inner Lamination

We laminate all the interior pages.

Paper

Board books are made of the same paper throughout, so there’s no difference between the cover and the interior pages.

Most board books feature colorful illustrations, cartoons, or other artwork. So, we recommend printing on C1S paper to get the best results.

coated one side (C1S) paper

C1S paper—also called “coated one side” paper—is paper that has been treated with a special coating on only one side, while the other side is left uncoated. The coated side has a brighter, smoother surface, making it ideal for vibrant, full-color printing of the artwork and text of your story. The uncoated side has a more natural, rougher texture, but in board book printing, this rough side is not visible because two sheets are glued together, with the uncoated sides facing inward. This way, only the smooth, coated sides are exposed, ensuring a high-quality finish for your book’s pages.

Dust Jacket

The so-called “dust jacket” is the most common and practical way of covering a hardcover book. Used alone or combined with image-wrapping, it finishes your book with a professional touch while adding five printable surfaces—front, back, spine, and two inside flaps. We can print it in full colour, gloss coat it, matte coat it; emboss, deboss, laminate, and foil stamp it, too, for added effects.

End Sheet Paper

  • If your book size is 8.5″ x 11″ or less with an interior page count of fewer than 320 pages, then a good option for the end sheets is 140 gsm / 95 lb offset paper.
  • If your book size is larger than 8.5″ x 11″, then 180 gsm / 122 lb offset paper would be better.
  • If your end sheets will be printed and your book’s interior uses gloss or matte art paper—say, for an art book or coffee table book—to make sure the colors match well, use 157gsm / 58 lb gloss or matte art paper for your end sheets.

Page Count

One sheet of paper is equal to two pages.

The total page count is a multiple of 4. When printing and binding your book, we fold sheets into “signatures”.

The maximum page count here is 800 pages. If you need more pages, please contact us.

If your book is larger, say, 8.5″ x 11″ or A4 size, one signature will have 16 pages. So, the inner page amount should be divisible by 16. Making your page counts match signatures is the most economical solution.
