End Sheet Paper
If your book size is 8.5" x 11" or less with an interior page count of fewer than 320 pages, then a good option for the end sheets is 140 gsm / 95 lb offset paper.
If your book size is larger than 8.5" x 11", then 180 gsm / 122 lb offset paper would be better.
If your end sheets will be printed and your book's interior uses gloss or matte art paper—say, for an art book or coffee table book—to make sure the colors match well, use 157gsm / 58 lb gloss or matte art paper for your end sheets.

Binding for Hardcover Books

By default, we recommend “sewn hardcover” binding rather than the simple glue-only binding which other printing services offer. Sewn hardcovers give a vastly superior result both aesthetically and practically with a negligible difference in cost. Your choice will depend on your budget, the style and length of your book, and other factors, of course. But this hardcover binding option achieves high-end results which always impress. You can open a sewn binding flat with no damage to the spine, too, which makes it ideal for appreciative browsing and repeat reading.

How We Make Sewn Hardcover Binding

Sewn hardcover binding combines durability with a polished, professional look, making it ideal for premium publications. Here's how the process works:

  1. Organizing the Pages: The interior pages are grouped into “signatures” (small sections of folded pages).
  2. Printing and Cutting: Each signature is printed and trimmed to the desired size.
  3. Sewing the Signatures: These signatures are stitched together using strong thread, creating a sturdy book block.
  4. Gluing and Casing In: The sewn book block is glued into a rigid hard casing, which is covered with cloth or paper, and often wrapped with a printed sheet to form the cover.

Sewn hardcover binding is not only elegant but also one of the most resilient binding methods, ensuring your book stands the test of time.
