What Are Custom Holographic Cards?

Holographic card is a special type of iridescent card popular for printing game character cards, trading cards, sports cards, gift cards, and many more besides. They are frequently referred to as hologram cards, holofoil cards, or just foil cards. It is basically a thin film of multicolored metallic foil, carefully applied on the surface of the card prior to printing. The finished sheet has a characteristic luster — a kind of rainbow iridescence — when the imprinted pattern is viewed from particular perspectives.

Custom holographic cards are those that we make for you according to your own design and artwork ideas—either as an independent project as a component in a board game, or for any other purpose you require.

Printing Techniques for Custom Holographic Cards

UV printing is the most common, efficient, and best method for holographic card production. We use specialized UV offset machines to apply both white and CMYK inks onto premium holographic cardstock. White ink masks areas where the holographic effect isn't needed, while the transparent CMYK inks let the holographic surface shine through. After printing, we typically finish with a UV varnish—smooth or sand—over the entire card or specific design elements, based on your artwork. This varnish makes certain details “pop” off the card, creating a mesmerizing “3D” effect on holographic paper.

Custom Metallic Foil Cards

An interesting and popular variation on standard holographic card is metallic foil card, which rather than having the iridescent rainbow effect comes in a monochrome metallic sheen with colors such as gold, silver, copper, and bronze.

Holographic Card Sizes

Which card size you choose for your custom holographic cards depends on your artistic preferences, the practical requirements of your game or other project, and your budget. If you opt for one of our standard sizes, then we'll already have the die cut molds in stock and won't need to charge you any added fees. If you select an unusual size, then we may need to charge you an added fee to make the mold before printing.

Custom Printed Holographic Card Surface Options

Aside from printing on holographic paper, we offer several options for finishing the surface of your cards. Adding a final coating can help protect the cards from scuffing, scratching, and dirt or moisture. It can also give the finished cards are more polished, professional look.

Varnishing

A gloss or matte varnish can be applied to one or both sides of the card for protection and to help make the colors of the printed artwork more vivid.

Gloss Lamination
Special Coating

Gloss, matte, or soft-touch lamination are great options for finishing cards. With this method, we apply a thin plastic film over the surface which is then adhered and cured using heat.

Holographic Card Printing Textured Coating
Textured Coating

We can apply a special coating to the cards which gives them a textured finish such as linen, beaten metal, or parchment, for example. This can be the perfect effect for fantasy or history inspired games.

Holographic Card Printing Foil Stamping

Foil stamping uses a special mold called a die to apply an area of metallic foil to the surface of the card. Gold, silver, copper, and bronze are the most common colors, but we can do a range of pigments, including black or white, too.

Custom Individual Numbers and QR Codes

Besides custom holographic card printing, we also can print individual serial numbers and QR codes on each holographic card if you wish. This can be a great option to link your physical cards to a virtual property such as your website or online store, or for integrated online and offline games. Serial numbers are a good addition to your cards if you release them intermittently and have a collection model where certain numbers are rarer and have a higher trading value.

Hardcover Board Book Bnding

This binding method adds a hardcover to a standard board book for extra durability and a premium feel. Like traditional board books, the pages are glued together rather than bound, with a printed sheet wrapped over the first and last boards and across the spine. The difference is that a hardcover is then applied, enhancing protection and making it a popular choice for high-quality board books.

The interior pages will have rounded outer corners. The corners of the cover are not normally rounded. If you need round corners for your cover, please contact us.

Inner Lamination

We laminate all the interior pages.

Paper

Board books are made of the same paper throughout, so there’s no difference between the cover and the interior pages.

Most board books feature colorful illustrations, cartoons, or other artwork. So, we recommend printing on C1S paper to get the best results.

coated one side (C1S) paper

C1S paper—also called “coated one side” paper—is paper that has been treated with a special coating on only one side, while the other side is left uncoated. The coated side has a brighter, smoother surface, making it ideal for vibrant, full-color printing of the artwork and text of your story. The uncoated side has a more natural, rougher texture, but in board book printing, this rough side is not visible because two sheets are glued together, with the uncoated sides facing inward. This way, only the smooth, coated sides are exposed, ensuring a high-quality finish for your book’s pages.

Dust Jacket

The so-called “dust jacket” is the most common and practical way of covering a hardcover book. Used alone or combined with image-wrapping, it finishes your book with a professional touch while adding five printable surfaces—front, back, spine, and two inside flaps. We can print it in full colour, gloss coat it, matte coat it; emboss, deboss, laminate, and foil stamp it, too, for added effects.

Endsheet Paper

  • If your book size is 8.5″ x 11″ or less with an interior page count of fewer than 320 pages, then a good option for the end sheets is 140 gsm / 95 lb offset paper.
  • If your book size is larger than 8.5″ x 11″, then 180 gsm / 122 lb offset paper would be better.
  • If your endsheets will be printed and your book’s interior uses gloss or matte art paper—say, for an art book or coffee table book—to make sure the colors match well, use 157gsm / 58 lb gloss or matte art paper for your end sheets.

The endsheets connect the hardcover casing and the interior pages when binding the book. So, there are two endsheets, one at the front and one at the back and both glued to the grayboard cover.

One sheet of paper is equal to two pages.

The total page count is a multiple of 4. When printing and binding your book, we fold sheets into “signatures”.

The maximum page count here is 800 pages. If you need more pages, please contact us.

If your book is larger, say, 8.5″ x 11″ or A4 size, one signature will have 16 pages. So, the inner page amount should be divisible by 16. Making your page counts match signatures is the most economical solution.
