Foil Stamping Maximum Size

In most cases, the maximum foil stamping mold size is 12 x 12 inches, meaning the maximum area for one instance of foil stamping is 12" x 12". This size typically allows us to cover the front cover, spine, and back cover all at once for a seamless design. If the target area is larger than 12" x 12", the foil stamping can be done multiple times to cover the full area for a cohesive finish.

Large Size Foil Stamping

How We Make Custom Foil Stamping Books

Step 1: We produce a custom foil stamping mold.

Step 2: We place the mold and heat the foil stamping machine to around 120°C — which gives it the name heat foil stamping.

Step 3: The foil material and printed paper imprint through the mold.

Step 4: The foil material goes through the mold and adheres to the paper.

Once the foil stamping process is complete, we move on to the next step of binding.

Common Coffee Table Book Sizes

A coffee table book is an oversized hardcover bound book. Coffee table books are designed for presentation. They should impress, intrigue, and catch the eye. While the exact dimensions depend on your content, how many photographs and illustrations you include, and the layout and orientation, most coffee table books are large, printed on premium art paper, and bound in hardcovers. A landscape-oriented collection of black-and-white or full-color art photography may be larger than an anthology of your verse; and a memoir, family history, or travelogue may better suit a large portrait format. Here's a handy coffee table book size chart. Explore the possibilities to help you to decide which size would best suit your project.

Common Coffee Table Book Sizes
Square Sizes 8" x 8" 8.5" x 8.5" 9" x 9" 10" x 10" 10.5" x 10.5" 11" x 11" 12" x 12"

Smaller sizes—even down to 6" x 9" are convenient if you need to enhance a more intimate interior or ‘top off' an elegant stack of grander volumes. Larger sizes make a stronger impression. But you're not limited to the suggestions above. At QinPrinting, we specialize in custom coffee table book printing in any size or format you wish. Only remember that extensive customization incurs higher costs and slower turnaround times because there's more pre-press and setup involved. But for your dream project, or as part of an overall interior décor renovation, the added investment could be worthwhile. It's always your decision.

FAQs

Is foil stamping expensive?

No! Foil stamping is very affordable in China with QinPrinting's offset printing. Adding a foil stamp to the cover typically costs less than $1 extra per book.

For example, if you are printing 100 copies of a 64-page 8.5" × 11" paperback, the cost is $546. If you add one-place foil stamping, the cost increases to $576 — just a $30 difference. That means the foil stamping adds only $0.30 per book!

You can always check our online calculator to compare prices and see if it is suitable for your project.

What is the difference between foil stamping and embossing?

  • Foil stamping: This involves applying a metallic or colored foil to the surface of the paper using heat and pressure. The foil adheres to specific areas, creating a shiny, reflective finish. It is typically used for logos, titles, and decorative elements.
  • Embossing: This is a process that raises certain areas of the paper to create a three-dimensional effect. Instead of using color or metallic finishes like foil stamping, embossing creates texture by pressing the paper from beneath. This raises the design or text on the surface, and it is often used for subtle, elegant effects or to enhance tactile appeal.

In short, foil stamping adds color and shine, while embossing creates texture and depth. Both can be used together for a more complete and eye-catching design!

What is the difference between foil stamping and foil printing?

  • Foil Stamping: This technique uses heat and pressure to transfer a metallic foil (such as gold or silver) onto the surface of a material, typically paper. The foil adheres only to the areas where a die is pressed, creating a shiny, raised effect. Often used for logos, text, or decorative designs, foil printing adds a premium look to a printed piece.
  • Foil Printing: This is a more straightforward printing technique where metallic or colored foil is applied to the surface using ink-based methods (like offset or digital printing). The foil is printed directly onto the paper using a printer, rather than being applied with heat and pressure like in foil stamping. As a result, foil printing creates a flat, shiny design without the raised texture that foil stamping provides.

In summary, foil stamping involves heat and pressure for a raised, shiny effect, while foil printing uses ink-based methods to apply flat metallic foils.

How can I prepare my foil stamping files for printing?

If your design includes special finishes such as foil stamping, set these elements as spot colors and label them with the corresponding process name.

Hardcover Board Book Bnding

This binding method adds a hardcover to a standard board book for extra durability and a premium feel. Like traditional board books, the pages are glued together rather than bound, with a printed sheet wrapped over the first and last boards and across the spine. The difference is that a hardcover is then applied, enhancing protection and making it a popular choice for high-quality board books.

The interior pages will have rounded outer corners. The corners of the cover are not normally rounded. If you need round corners for your cover, please contact us.

Inner Lamination

Paper

Board books are made of the same paper throughout, so there’s no difference between the cover and the interior pages.

Most board books feature colorful illustrations, cartoons, or other artwork. So, we recommend printing on C1S paper to get the best results.

coated one side (C1S) paper

C1S paper—also called “coated one side” paper—is paper that has been treated with a special coating on only one side, while the other side is left uncoated. The coated side has a brighter, smoother surface, making it ideal for vibrant, full-color printing of the artwork and text of your story. The uncoated side has a more natural, rougher texture, but in board book printing, this rough side is not visible because two sheets are glued together, with the uncoated sides facing inward. This way, only the smooth, coated sides are exposed, ensuring a high-quality finish for your book’s pages.

Dust Jacket

The so-called “dust jacket” is the most common and practical way of covering a hardcover book. Used alone or combined with image-wrapping, it finishes your book with a professional touch while adding five printable surfaces—front, back, spine, and two inside flaps. We can print it in full colour, gloss coat it, matte coat it; emboss, deboss, laminate, and foil stamp it, too, for added effects.

Endsheet Paper

  • If your book size is 8.5″ x 11″ or less with an interior page count of fewer than 320 pages, then a good option for the end sheets is 140 gsm / 95 lb offset paper.
  • If your book size is larger than 8.5″ x 11″, then 180 gsm / 122 lb offset paper would be better.
  • If your endsheets will be printed and your book’s interior uses gloss or matte art paper—say, for an art book or coffee table book—to make sure the colors match well, use 157gsm / 58 lb gloss or matte art paper for your end sheets.

The endsheets connect the hardcover casing and the interior pages when binding the book. So, there are two endsheets, one at the front and one at the back and both glued to the grayboard cover.

If your book is larger, say, 8.5″ x 11″ or A4 size, one signature will have 16 pages. So, the inner page amount should be divisible by 16. Making your page counts match signatures is the most economical solution.
