What Is Matte Lamination?

Matte lamination is a finishing process where a thin, transparent, matte BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) film is applied to the surface of printed paper using heat and pressure. It can be applied to one or both sides depending on your project needs.

What sets matte lamination apart is its soft, non-reflective surface. Unlike gloss lamination, the matte BOPP film diffuses light rather than reflecting it, eliminating glare and creating a smooth, silky finish that feels as refined as it looks. Colors appear slightly deeper and richer, and the overall effect is one of understated elegance — making matte lamination the preferred choice for premium, sophisticated print products. It also pairs exceptionally well with foil stamping and spot UV, which stand out far more dramatically against a matte background than a glossy one.

Like gloss lamination, matte lamination adds protection against moisture, scuffing, and everyday handling. Please note that it also requires paper of above 105gsm — the laminated thinner paper would curl or develop wrinkles.

The Advantages of Matte Lamination

Matte lamination enhances both the appearance and durability of your printed pieces, giving them a refined, high-end quality that resonates with discerning audiences. Here are the key benefits:

  • Sophisticated, understated finish — the soft, non-reflective surface gives printed materials a classy, premium feel that many audiences associate with quality and craftsmanship.
  • Ideal for special finishes — matte lamination works beautifully alongside foil stamping and spot UV coating, which stand out far more dramatically against a matte background than a glossy one.
  • Added protection — the BOPP film adds a protective layer that guards against moisture, scratching, soiling, and everyday handling, helping your printed pieces look their best for longer.
  • Stronger and more durable — matte lamination reinforces the surface of your print, making it more resistant to wear during processing such as folding, binding, and boxing. It also helps prevent spine splitting on books with a high page count.
  • Easy to clean — the surface can be wiped clean with a dry cloth, making it practical for products that are handled frequently.
  • Versatile application — suitable for one or both sides of the paper, matte lamination works well across a broad range of products from book covers and packaging to cards and marketing materials.
  • Colors appear slightly darker — matte lamination can make printed colors appear slightly deeper compared to unlaminated or gloss laminated surfaces, which can enhance the richness of certain designs.

Matte Lamination vs Gloss Lamination

Both matte and gloss lamination protect your printed surfaces and are applied using the same BOPP film process. The key difference between them lies in their visual and tactile effects.

Matte lamination diffuses light rather than reflecting it, giving a soft, silky finish that feels as good as it looks. It is widely considered to have a more premium, sophisticated feel and is a popular choice for literary fiction, art books, luxury packaging, and any product where an understated, high-end impression matters.

Gloss lamination, on the other hand, delivers a shiny, highly reflective surface that makes colors appear bright and vivid. It is ideal for projects where bold, eye-catching visuals are important — such as children’s picture books, product catalogs, packaging, and board games.

Choosing between the two comes down to your product, your audience, and the impression you want to create. If you’re looking for an understated, high-end feel, matte is likely the better choice. If you want colors to pop and images to shine, gloss may suit your project better. When in doubt, we recommend ordering a sample pack so you can see and feel the difference for yourself before making a decision.

Popular Applications for Matte Lamination

Matte lamination is a versatile finish that works well across a wide range of print products. Here are some of the most popular applications:

  • Art books and coffee table books — matte lamination is an excellent choice for art and photography books, where the softer finish enhances the visual depth of images without the distraction of glare or reflection.
  • High-end product catalogs — for luxury goods, fashion, and lifestyle catalogs where a premium feel matters, matte lamination elevates the perceived quality of the piece and holds up well to repeated browsing.
  • Custom printed boxes — matte lamination is a popular choice for the outer surface of custom packaging. It gives boxes a sophisticated, upmarket appearance while providing protection during storage, handling, and display.
  • Literary fiction and non-fiction books — matte lamination is the go-to choice for most adult trade books, giving covers a polished, bookshop-quality look that appeals to a wide readership.
  • Cards — tarot cards, oracle cards, flash cards, and other card products often benefit from matte lamination for its premium feel. Note that like gloss lamination, matte lamination also increases surface friction, so if smooth shuffling is important for your card product, varnish or poker varnish may be a better choice.
  • Other products — posters, presentation folders, board games, and many other print products can also benefit from a matte laminate finish.
